Opting out of treatment

Following your diagnosis, your care team will offer what they consider to be the most suitable treatment options based on your specific cancer type and your overall health condition. They will be there to address all your concerns and alleviate any uncertainties, but the final decisions regarding your care choices rest with you.

In the event that you have advanced or metastatic lung cancer that hasn't responded to treatments, or if your priority is comfort for yourself and your loved ones, it's important for you and your care team to collaborate to ensure that you're comfortable and that your symptoms are effectively managed.

  • Can you explain the potential benefits and risks of continuing treatment versus opting for comfort care?
  • What are the expected outcomes of refusing treatment and focusing on symptom management?
  • How will my quality of life be affected by each option?
  • Are there any alternative treatments or supportive care measures that could improve my comfort and well-being?
  • How will my symptoms be managed if I choose not to pursue further treatment?
  • What palliative care options are available to me?
  • How will my decision impact my prognosis and overall health?
  • Is there any psychological support available that may be beneficial for me during this time?
